Celebrating Small Businesses

What type of products or services do you offer?
We provide a customized culinary experience served professionally and considerately.
Either at our Restaurant, our Event Center or off-site at your location.
What inspired you to start your business?
I started washing dishes at The Blue Heron when I was 14. All aspects of the operations and the services we provided people excited me. It seemed natural to me. It was fun. So I continued working there and learning all areas while managing the kitchen and becoming Head Chef.
The opportunity came to purchase the business in 2004 and we’ve owned it for the last 21 years.
When did you open your doors (or purchase the business), and what was that first year like?
The property was a dance hall in starting in the 1930’s called The Pavilion and later Cold Spring Ballroom. It burned down in 1969. The current building was built in the early 1970’s and the start of The Blue Heron as a landmark Supper Club. We purchased July 15, 2004 and have owned it since.
The first year was great…busy…exciting….seemed somewhat easy…seemed like we knew what we were doing!
What’s something you’ve learned about owning a business that you didn’t expect?
That not every year is like the first year!
How has the community supported you throughout your journey?
We’ve always received great support from the community. An example worth a mention is during the Pandemic when we navigated closures and mandates…the community showed up and we would not be here without that.
What does being a small business in the Cold Spring area mean to you?
It means providing needed services and resources to the local and surrounding communities, while helping provide for our families of our 35 team members.
How have you been able to support the local communities?
We have both volunteered and financially supported over 100 different local organizations for the last 2 decades, resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars back into the local communities.
